Today, the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) and the Netherlands Education Support Office (Nuffic Neso Indonesia) signed an MOU to co-finance two more batches of the International Master Program on Mathematic Education (IMPoME) for a total of 20 young Indonesian lecturers. IMPoME started in 2009 and has so far produced 22 master-degree holders in Realistic Mathematic Education (RME) while currently there are 10 students still studying in the Netherlands at the Freudenthal Institute of the University of Utrecht. The two final groups of students will depart to the Netherlands in 2013 and 2014. From the Dutch side the financial contribution comes from the StuNed Scholarship programme.

IMPoME aims to support the implementation and dissemination of RME or Pendidikan Matematika Realistic Indonesia (PMRI) in Indonesia by providing scholarships to math lecturers to study Realistic Mathematic Education (RME) and pursue their master degree in the Netherlands. IMPoME has been implemented in Indonesia since 2001 by applying pilot project in 12 elementary schools and now has been implemented in hundreds of schools spread through out Aceh to Ambon involving more than 20 Teacher Training Colleges or Lembaga Pendidikan Tinggi Keguruan (LPTK). RME was pioneered by Prof. Freudenthal from the Netherlands who taught math by linking it to our daily activities.

“The Dutch Higher Education Institution for this program is Utrecht University, a prominent university in the Netherlands which is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in various global rankings. Therefore, we are convinced that the quality of the program and its graduates will be beneficial for mathematics education in Indonesia. We hope that this program will becomes a sustainaible double degree program after the completion of these two batches, “Mervin Bakker, Nuffic Neso Director said.
“The double degree program between the Indonesian partners, UNESA and UNSRI, and Utrecht University is part of the commitment to maintain and to improve the existing cooperation aiming to increase the academic staffs and Indonesian’s university towards world class university. Currently we are preparing a pre double degree for a year and double degree for 2 years” stated Supriadi Rustad, Director of Human Resources, Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI), Ministry of Education and Culture.

The selected participants come from various universities in Indonesia and are pooled at Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI), Palembang and Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) for selection as well for the Indonesian part of the program. The selected candidates have finished their English preparation class and foundation courses at UNESA and UNSRI. Upon returning from studying in the Netherlands the students would conduct six-month research in Indonesia.

After selection on the bundle of requirements for students from many universities, the students who pass this part would be followed the next selection. The next selection in this program is an interview with the committee. Finally, the committee got 30 names of the candidates who have gotten this scholarship. 30 students would be divided into 2 universities, at Unsri and Unesa. In July 2012, The committee at Unsri and Unesa invited all students who had accepted in this program to meet with a lecture from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He is Marteen Dolk, a head of mathematics education study program in that university. The students got a workshop with Marteen Dolk during three days. This workshop became one of the requirements to study in Holland.

Before the beginning of course at Unsri or Unesa, each student got intensive English training during 1,5 month in 2012, which has the aim mainly at preparing the student to pass the Ielts test which score overall is more than or equal 6,5 and especially writing score has to get more than or equal 6,0. The students who can pass the Ielts test will get an opportunity to study at Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, but for students who cannot pass this test, they will learn at Unsri or Unesa until graduate their study.

The Courses of Impome at Unsri

The courses at Impome of Sriwijaya University are divided into five courses in the first semester. There are problem solving (3 SKS), Abstract Algebra (3 SKS), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in math education (3 SKS), introduction to Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) (3 SKS), classroom observation (3 SKS).

The lecturers who teach Impome’s student are lecturer with enormous experience with RME approach. They are Prof. Zulkardi, a lecturer who teaches in ICT in mathematics and Introduction to RME, Dr. Ratu Ilma gets the course about classroom observation, Dr. Yusuf Hartono teaches a lesson on problem solving, Dr Darmawijaya teaches on abstract algebra. Mr Zulkardi also said in first of meeting in the classroom that Impome’s program aims to build the Candidates of New Academic Staff with four abilities in which become a lecture/teacher, a designer, a researcher and a leader. Furthermore, In this case, Impome’s program not only teaches the student to be a lecturer but also can be the other role in our life, Of course being human that can provide benefit for the environment.

The Information About Impome

I know that some of you will ask about Impome, “what is Impome?”. I got information about Impome from students who have gotten education about Impome and from weblog which I read. In my blog here and In the following text below, I will make several explanations about Impome.

Impome stands for International Master Program on Mathematics Education. Impome’s program is cooperation among Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, Surabaya State University (Unesa) in Surabaya and Sriwijaya University (Unsri) in Palembang. This program gives an opportunity as a education scholarship for the lecturers or the Candidates of New Academic Staff or many people always call this requirement when they apply this scholarship with Calon Tenaga Akademik Baru (CTAB), and the teachers of mathematics with a bachelor degree in mathematics education or in mathematics to join.

Talking about allowance is very important for us to know, who is the sponsor of this program?

This program is funded between DIKTI from Indonesia and Neso from the Netherland. For students who studying in Indonesia will be provided by DIKTI Depdiknas (BPPS), while the period in the Netherlands will be funded by StuNed (Studeren in Nederland).

According to information and experience from the students who have graduated from this program, the program will be held for a period of 2 years which is divided into 3 stages, namely;

1. 6 months in Indonesia (Unesa or Unsri),

2. 1 year in the Netherlands (University of Utrecht),

3. 6 months for research and thesis writing in Indonesia.

Hopefully, my little explanation will give you more information about Impome. You can join with Impome in 2013 when the committee of Impome open this sholarship, I have an advice for you, please prepare your English ability because this courses in Impome uses English when the lecturers teach and give courses in teaching and learning process.
